The Hearts for Hanah Scholarship Fund
The Hearts for Hanah Scholarship Fund is being established within The Community Foundation to provide scholarships that celebrate the life of Hanah Rae Friel.
Scholarships from this fund shall be available to students graduating from any high school in the Foundation’s service area and Neuqua Valley High School for attendance at a two-year junior or community college or for attendance at a four-year college or university.
Students at any level of study are eligible to apply for these scholarships (current high school graduates, home-schooled graduates, current and returning undergraduates or students at the graduate level of study). Eligibility for returning students will be limited to those whose permanent residence is within the Foundation’s service area.
These awards are reserved for students who will be pursuing a career in fields that promote the well-being of children. Such fields include, but are not necessarily limited to, pediatric medicine, pediatric medical research, pediatric nursing or primary/secondary education. Preference shall be given to those students entering a medical field of study.
To be eligible for these scholarships, students must be able to demonstrate a history of community service through prior participation in civic or church activities, within the school setting or in community-based organizations such as scouting, charitable volunteer activities, etc. It is essential that students are able to demonstrate that they have been consistently donating their time and energy into giving back to the community.
To determine the effectiveness of an applicant’s history of civic involvement, emphasis will be placed upon the student’s essay, personal interview and teacher evaluations.
Initially, these scholarships shall provide $2,000 per student for up to one year of study. In subsequent years, the amount or number of these awards may be increased if the income available for distribution can support such increases.
All scholarships from this fund are to be awarded in accordance with The Community Foundation’s policies regarding academic ability and financial need.
Each scholarship shall be awarded in the name of Hanah Rae.
